This poncho is cut for a loose fit from a handira and is ideal for layering.
The handira or "wedding blanket" is the most important part of a Berber bride's trousseau. The mother and sisters of the young maiden weave it for months from pure wool, then adorn it with bright sequins. On her wedding day, the bride wears it as a skirt or wrapped around the shoulders, and it becomes part of the dowry brought to the groom. Later, a handira will serve as a warm blanket.
Usually white or cream, handiras have one side decorated with tufts and fringes so that the snow won't soak the mantle during the wedding journey.
